How does a WiFi QR code actually work?
The QR code contains your network name, password, and security type in a standard text format that phones recognize (it starts with WIFI: under the hood). When someone scans it, their phone reads those credentials directly from the code and offers to join the network. There's no link, no redirect, and no internet connection needed to scan it — the code itself is the data.
Does my WiFi password get sent to your server?
No. The code is generated by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. Your network name and password never leave your computer or phone — we couldn't see them if we wanted to, because they're never transmitted anywhere.
Will it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Modern iPhones and Android phones can scan WiFi QR codes with the built-in camera app and will prompt to join the network. Very old phones may need a QR scanner app, but anything from the last several years handles it natively.
What happens if I change my WiFi password?
The printed code stops working, because the password is baked into the code itself. There's no way around this — WiFi QR codes are static by nature, since the phone reads the credentials straight from the code with no server in between. If you change your password, come back here and print a new code. It takes about a minute.
Which security type should I choose?
Most home and business routers today use WPA (which covers WPA2 and WPA3) — if you're not sure, that's almost certainly the right choice. WEP is an outdated standard you'll only see on very old routers. Choose "None" only for open networks with no password.
Do I need a ScanTrail account to use this?
